As the political tensions within Texas arose around Senate-Bill 2— a program offered to pay students on attending private school—which proceeded to tighten funding for public schools. Public schools couldn’t suffice their deficit ceiling leading to the closure of curricular courses and programs. This included Vandegrift’s esteemed International Baccalaureate (IB) Program.

I remember the moment my phone chimed with the message that the program I, among many, had awaited years to join was shutting just before we could cross the finish line. A wave of acrid irritation swept me, a warmth that truly boiled my blood into action. Immediately I connected with other students who were impacted and we quickly got to work in order to advocate for not only our program but to attest the proposed SB2. We cofounded what we called SaveIB and the motto we sang:
